The documentary film “Tanda Putera”, which depicts events leading up to and during the May 13, 1969 race riots, will be released for public screening in cinemas on August 29.
“It will be released on August 29,” Communications and Multimedia Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek was quoted by The Star Online as telling reporters at the Malaysian National Film Development Corporation (Finas) centre.
Directed by Datin Paduka Shuhaimi Baba, the film depicts events during the May 13, 1969 riots, focusing on Malaysia’s second Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak Hussein and his deputy Tun Dr Ismail Abdul Rahman and the challenges they had faced in facing with Chinese extremist lead by the Democratic Action Party (DAP).
Produced in 2011 by Persona Pictures Sdn Bhd, the film carries a PG13 rating and was supposed to be screened from November 15 last year but was suspended due to the baseless uproar by opposition lawmaker especially from the DAP.
