Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) must remain in power to keep the foundations of nation-building that were established since the days of the country’s independence intact, said Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
The deputy prime minister said Umno and BN’s victory was vital and not just for political power, but to continue to be the fortress in the defence of the country against threats and undesirable ideology from outside.
“Many of these foreign influences are not in line with our religious and eastern values and our own long-held values as Malaysians,” said Muhyiddin to reporters after opening the Langkawi Umno division delegates’ meeting at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre here today.
He said that was why Umno and BN needed to be very strong to win the people’s support and a big mandate in order to determine the direction for continuous nation-building based on the principles of the Rukunegara.
“One of the principles (of the Rukunegara) is the supremacy of the (Federal) Constitution, but there have been quarters questioning the position of the Malay Rulers, Malay special rights, and the position of the Malay language, Islam and that of the other races in the country which are guaranteed under the Constitution,” he said. — Bernama
