After losing support from the Malay Muslim majority of this country, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today launched a scathing attack on Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, labeling him a 'kafir' (infidel) and a traitor to Muslims for supposedly working with UMNO.
Dr Mahathir, who is Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman and Pakatan Harapan's Top Dog, said Hadi had once called Umno a party of infidels, but is now working with Umno, hence making him an infidel as well.
"Hadi once labeled the government a 'kafir' government and that it is a righteous deed for one to fight the government. He had said that if you died doing this, you will go to heaven.
"Hadi was the one who said that if you work with kafirs, you also become a kafir. So he himself is a kafir now," said Dr Mahathir, who was prime minister for 22 years.
Dr Mahathir also dismissed Pas' decision to contest 100 seats in the upcoming 14th general election. He claimed that Hadi knows Pas will lose most of the seats they contest.
"Despite knowing that Pas will lose, Hadi knows well that he will be helping Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak win the election by splitting the opposition votes. And that is his intention.
"That’s is not very Islamic. In Malay, we call it 'pengkhianat' (traitor)," he claimed.
Dr Mahathir claimed Pas had never aimed to contest more than 11 seats when it wasn't in any opposition coalition.However, Dr. Mahathir failed to provide proof to back up his claims.
"Now they want to go in alone to contest the election and they are going to lose," he added.
Tun Mahathir was speaking to reporters at the government funded Perdana Leadership Foundation, at the soft launch of the 'Harapan Baru Policy Talks' platform to discuss and debate policy issues.
