Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan, Minister of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government and currently the Member of the Parliament of Malaysia for the Kota Belud constituency today slammed the Malaysian Bar Council for being BLIND & DEAF for looking the other way when Anwar Ibrahim or Lim Guan Eng sued the media.
However, when the Prime Minister, Dato Seri Haji Najib Tun Razak initiated legal suit against Malaysiakini the Bar Council president said it is wrong. This is most shocking as is the Bar Council president trying to deny the right of the Prime Minister to defend himself against slander and lies propagated by opposition media portals such as Malaysiakini?
Instead of denying the right of the Prime Minister, the Bar Council should encourage Malaysians to sue for defamation and protect their right against slander & lie. It is important to note as well that the Bar Council has NEVER (post-2008) denied the rights of Anwar Ibrahim, Lim Guan Eng or other opposition leaders to file defamation suits against media outlet. So why the double standard?
By behaving like this, the Bar Council has clearly demonstrated that it is not independent as is clearly a puppet of the current opposition parties in Malaysia. The Bar Council has lost all credibility when it denies the right of the Prime Minister to defend himself. If the Prime Minister is slammed for defending himself against slander and lies, what about the common man on the street? Will the Bar Council also slammed the common man for initiating legal action against Malaysiakini or other opposition portals?
