As usual every morning my team will go through all the online portal to look for articles that we deemed to be biased or insensitive towards the Malay/Muslim community of this country. Not only that, we also observe commentary from readers to gauge the level of support that the people have of the government and its policies. One that got our attention today was an article by one Lok Wing Kong titled Let Proton Die. What was more astonishing was that the writer wrote it in such an emotional way that apparently all the "problems" , if we may say problems faced by PROTON is caused by UMNO.
To be honest and fair to the party, there is no interrelation between PROTON and UMNO. PROTON is a private entity owned by DRB-HICOM and UMNO has never been the owners of DRB-HICOM. However, without dwelling much let us go through in detail the article written by Lok Wing Kong and debunk all his childish allegations:
Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad has done many wrongs, one of which is the national car Proton.
Look at the word use, Proton was a wrong decision by Tun Mahathir.
After more than 30 years, the Proton has not yet achieved good quality, reliability and outstanding design to compete domestically and globally.
Seriously? if Proton is of no good quality, reliability and outstanding design why did DRB-HICOM paid RM Billions for it? Why is Proton still controlling 25% of the market share. Most of the readers will then say the reason Proton controls 25% of the market share is because of its price, well there you go again Proton cars are priced at below RM 50K which is about the same compared to Perodua, how come Perodua is not being criticized as well?
Why? It is because the engineers who were sent to Japan to learn under “Look East” policy did not learn because they had no brain to learn? This is due to the failure of our education system producing rubbish graduates.
Now the writer is getting personal, he is criticizing the engineers. The engineers that was sent to Japan were all Malay's, sponsored by Mara/JPA/Proton. My question to any Proton engineers that is reading this entry, are you guys that bad? I am sure you guys are as good as the dude in Honda/Toyota albeit with less resources to compete globally.
South Korean cars started about the same time as the Proton, and just look at these Korean cars, Proton is pale in comparison. What a shame!
The writer is comparing Proton to korean cars such as Hyundai and Kia. May i enlighten the writer on some history related to the Korean cars. Hyundai is not only an automotive giant but they are an integrated heavy industry conglomerate which has ports, heavy engineering shipyards, etc. You name it and they have it. With this kind of resources design and developing a car is just too easy compared to PROTON which is a local automotive player with only 25% of domestic market share. Please compare apple to apple rather than providing false data to the readers.
Dr Mahathir still has the gut to say that Malaysia can also make airplanes to compete with the Boeing or the Airbus. This is the typical character and mentality of Bolehland.
So "bolehland" can't dream? Can't push ourselves to the limit to achieve success?
Heavy taxes on foreign cars are imposed so that the price of Proton cars is made competitive in the local markets and heavily subsidised Proton cars sold overseas.
It has been reported that cars in Malaysia are the most expensive in the world. Without the distorted and heavy taxes, Proton would have been closed long ago.
Cars in Malaysia are not the most expensive in the world.
Many cronies have been made filthy rich by Approved Permits. This has caused tremendous financial hardship to the rakyat who has the highest household debt.
These cronies are mainly the goons in Umno Baru, Dr Mahathir is one of them. The BN government under Najib is afraid to offend them. Therefore, although Proton is bleeding heavily, the government dares not withdraw the APs and let it die.
Again this writer is out of depth and the data he has are obsolete. PROTON is a private entity owned by DRB-HICOM. Any lost that is reported by PROTON is absorbed by DRB-HICOM and not the Government,

Dr Mahathir has recently said that if Proton cannot compete, it is better to let it die. It is doubtful that he wants his pet project going down.
Many believe that the powers will “switch off” Proton's life support machine when Dr Mahathir is no more around. If it is done now, he would die of heart attack. Lim Kit Siang wishes him to live a long life. So let the Proton man live as long as he likes.
When Proton dies, there will be domino effects. Many people directly or indirectly related to Proton will fall. These people are related to the Umnoputra goons, therefore the powers that be would prefer to spoonfeed them rather than kill them.
Hence it is expected that the soon-to-be announced National Car Policy will have very little changes.
It is better to let Proton die now rather than keep it on life support to let the rakyat suffer. Our national debt is high at about 54% and it is still going up unabated.
To let Proton die now is the best thing the BN government would have done since independence. One huge leakage would have been plugged.
In conclusion, the writer is still thinking that the government owned PROTON which is a total mislead of the article he wrote. PROTON is a private entity and has got nothing to do with UMNO, BN or the government,

the writer is certainly not the first person to misunderstand the basis of Proton being established in the early days. The once listed as a GLC automotive car manufacturer suffers loss due to this kind of irrational "gossips". one will never really know his friend until they travel together- this analogy can be applied to one's curiosity against Proton. try to "travel" with the organization in your line of career. learn from the travel and you'll understand its potentials & constraints.
The korean start to make cars as early of 1960s..their first model was a cortina which was a rebadge from a ford's model which i'm not sure in 1968.our 1st a was a proton saga where began to sell in 1984..but proton bashers love to make us believe that we stat at the same time with koreans..there was a protection for national car but tat was until 2005.. Due to afta, proton is no longer receive the tax rebate..Rite now proton is paying the same tax structure like other ckd cars...the high car price in mesia is not because of proton..its because of the tax..unless mesian is ready to pay 5-6$ a litre of fuel then maybe its possible for us to buy a new honda civic @$90k....anyway no other country is stupid enough to let their industry to fall and just die just because of a few whores who are just cant stand that their sporean or thais cousins is driving a honda..imagine of 10-20 thousands of proton employees who will be out of jobs if they just let proton die..not including of the vendors..sales agents..at a very young age, proton is now progressing, their new suprima equipped with 6 air bags with 5 stars ancap safety standards which better if to compare for most hondas and supprisingly betternan accord 2013 in terms of safety for the price of less than 90k..they no longer produce a tin milo car..it about time for the sceptics to show support..that is how the japs and the koreans do it until what they are now..helping the local products is actually helping ourself and our economy..
