The state Barisan Nasional goes into the election war with a manifesto that promises something for everyone - setting up of a childcare centre in every district, improving public transportation and creating more jobs for locals.
The comprehensive manifesto will address the needs of different segments of society, such as career women, Penang residents, hawkers, commuters, senior citizens, students, flat dwellers, low and middle-income groups, tourists, the business community, foreign investors, youths and rural residents.
The 19-point manifesto includes the restoration of Penang's free port status, the building of a monorail system as well as abolishing motorcycle toll on Penang Bridge and hawker licence fees.
State Barisan chairman Teng Chang Yeow said the pledges encompass all aspects and focuses on the economic development of Penang.
“We have sound economic plans for Penangites but Pakatan Rakyat plans a tunnel instead.
“We also pledge to solve traffic congestion problems here,” he said to the cheers of supporters at the Tabung Haji Complex in Bayan Lepas here last night.
Other pledges include providing job matching services for women seeking to re-enter the job market, free annual personal insurance for voluntary patrol members and free annual health checks for senior citizens.
It will also concentrate on five state key result areas (SKRAs), namely a safe and green environment, health care, education, public transportation and affordable housing.
The emphasis of the manifesto is to transform Penang into a world-class tourism and service hub in the region.
It also explains that the free port status will ensure Penangites get to enjoy duty-free consumer goods and services, cheaper food and beverages, have more job opportunities created by the retail industry and strong economic growth.
The status will also allow tourists to enjoy duty-free shopping while investors will enjoy tax exemptions for goods imported into and exported from Penang to make business conditions more conducive and competitive.
Teng added that Barisan will continue the appreciation programmes like the Senior Citizen Appreciation Programme and Penang Golden Child Programme initiated by the DAP-led state government if they recapture the state and top up (the amount) by 100%.
