Bombardier Hartasuma Consortium, manufacturer of the rolling stock involved in this week’s stoppages on the LRT Kelana Jaya Line, has said that it is working towards a permanent solution for the issue it calls “dragging brake”.
“We as the vehicle manufacturer, together with Knorr-Bremse, our brake system supplier, have mobilised all the necessary resources to support Rapid Rail in resolving an issue known as dragging brake,” Emma Brett, head of communications for Bombardier Transportation said in an emailed statement from the UK.
“An interim solution is currently being implemented, while the permanent solution is being finalised,” she added.
“The safety of passengers is our number one priority. We assure the public that the brake system used on the Kelana Jaya Line is a ‘100% fail safe’ system.
“It is designed so that any failure to the braking system will result in the train not being able to move.”
Brett said that Bombardier endorsed the continued operation of the system by Rapid Rail and the company was confident that the current dragging brake issue would not have a safety implication on users.
She also said Bombardier Hartasuma Consortium welcomed Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar’s intention to set up a special committee.
“This initiative is in line with the Bombardier Hartasuma Consortium’s transparent approach in identifying and resolving the issue,” she said.
On Wednesday, two trains broke down within a few hours of each other, causing chaos for commuters.
The incident occurred during rush hour, resulting in many office workers getting to work late, and involved a Gombak-bound train at Setiawangsa station. Service was disrupted from 8.19am to 8.45am.
The second incident involved another Gombak-bound train near Universiti station at 12.18pm. A total of 53 passengers were transferred to a rescue train.
Service resumed at 12.35pm on an alternate track. – July 24, 2015.
