Finally, RTD and SPAD to start crackdown on Uber Taxi from October 1, 2014

Just saw the news that came in, finally the Road Transport Department and the Public Land Transport Commission (SPAD) has agreed to take action against Uber Taxi service providers from 1st October 2014. The nationwide crackdown will involve various agencies but will be led by RTD. I have written a lot with respect to the Uber taxi menace in the country, where their services are un-regulated and pose a danger to general public.

According to the JPJ director-general Datuk Seri Ismail Ahmad, private vehicles found providing the taxi-like services would be impounded. In addition to that,  individuals or companies providing the services could also be fined between RM1,000 and RM10,000 or jailed up to a year. This is very good as it shows the government is serious and takes action whenever there is a complain from the public.

People who criticize SPAD and RTD shall realise that using private vehicles as public transport was an offence under Section 16 of the Land Public Transportation Act 2010.  My question is, is the Malaysian public OK if people/service providers start to break the law just to ensure that they make profit? I am sure that we are not OK with this since the country has laws and as a responsible citizen we shall always obey the law at all times.

In addition, the public should aware that by using private vehicles as taxi, they are not covered by any insurance should they get involved in any accident. So are we willing to take that risk?
