I refer to the article produced yesterday by The Malaysian Insider titles "No Need to Suspend Train Service for Gemas - Gua Musang line, say lawmakers" and unfortunately the statement given by DAP member of Parliament from Kluang, Saudara Liew Chin Tong is full of irresponsible comments that totally disregards public safety of KTMB passengers. As an elected representative who have won two (2) General Elections, I had expected more of Saudara Liew.
I would like to quote Saudara Liew's statement in The Malaysian Insider :
“We do not question the views that passengers’ safety should be made the priority. But after asking insiders and experts, we believe there is another, better way than closing down the track entirely,”
Firstly, the statement from Saudara Liew is TOTALLY WRONG. How can an elected representative such as Saudara Liew allow such a situation to happen? I.e. allowing KTMB to operate when it is known that the track it is operating on is NOT SAFE?
Secondly, in his statement Saudara Liew did not disclose who were the experts that he had met that says that it is ok for KTMB to operate on an unsafe railway track. Will the so called "expert" be willing to go on record saying that the track is safe and he will be responsible for any accident that will occur? I clearly doubt it.
Thirdly, I find the statement from Saudara Liew is irresponsible and populist at best. He seems to provide a solution to this issue by requesting SPAD to allow KTMB to operate 20 hours a day and allocate four (4) hours for maintenance work. My question to Saudara Liew, in case during the 20 hours that KTMB is in operation an accident occurs will Saudara Liew take responsibility for the accident. I doubt it.
As an opposition Member of Parliament, it is easy for Saudara Liew to criticise and make populist demands but if anything were to happen, thr government would be blamed and call all sorts of name. Where will Saudara Liew be that time? Well he will be criticising the government!!
As a conclusion, i urge Saudara Liew to be more responsible in his statements as safety and peoples lives is not something to be politicize or played off. At least respect the value of a human life. Do not simply politicise this for a little political mileage. It is not worth it.
