A 27-year-old man was shot in his leg when police opened fire at robbery suspects at the Bandar Baru Sungai Buloh housing estate here.
The men, who were in a stolen car, were shot at when they allegedly tried to attack police on Wednesday night.
In the 8pm incident, the gang of five was at the housing estate, while a 12-man police team was patrolling the area.
Three suspects were in a car while two were on a motorcycle.
Sungai Buloh district police chief Supt Junaidi Bujang said police noticed the men behaving suspiciously and tailed them, before arresting the two on the motorcycle.
“Upon reaching Jalan 1D/3 in the housing estate, the driver of the car suddenly reversed and tried to ram into the police personnel who were following them but instead hit a parked car,” Junaidi said, adding that several of the policemen then overtook the car.
“The driver accelerated and tried to hit the police in front, but missed and sped on.
“Three shots were fired at the car, hitting its rear tyre and body, causing the driver to lose control and it skidded,” Junaidi said.
Two suspects got out of the car and fled, and the other man alighted and tried to take a weapon from his sling bag while charging at a police officer, who then shot at his leg.
“Checks on the car revealed that it was using fake plates and had been stolen in Saujana Utama here last week,” Junaidi said.
He said the injured man, who was sent to the Sungai Buloh Hospital, had a record for assault.
The duo on the motorcycle had no criminal record.
In a similar incident on Tuesday, a lorry hijacker was shot dead by police after a 20km chase. The hijacker had attempted to reverse the vehicle into an officer in Kota Puteri, Ijok.
The 35-year-old man had hijacked the lorry in Jalan Sibu, Taman Wahyu, Jinjang, at about 7am and he was at the Petaling Jaya courts on a charge of stealing a lorry a week earlier.
