Malaysian Chinese faces jail term for insulting Indonesia’s national flag #KLChronicle

A Malaysian is staring at the prospect of five years in jail after making an insulting remark about Indonesia's national flag recently.

According to The Jakarta Post, Broderik Chin was alleged to have said that the Indonesian flag could be replaced with his red underwear on August 16, a day before the country's Independence Day celebrations.
Chin, a general manager of a palm oil company, had allegedly made the joke after one of his employees failed to find a flag to be hoisted for the Independence Day commemoration.
A National Police spokesman Agus Rianto said a day after Chin made his remark, locals staged a rally outside the factory, in the town of Dumai in Riau (Sumatera), forcing him to make an apology.
However, that proved to be insufficient as Dumai police arrested Chin on August 21 and are expected to charge him in court soon.
If found guilty, Chin faces up to five years in prison, a fine of up to 500 million rupiah (RM138,000), or both,  under Article 66 of the 2009 law on the national flag, language, symbols and anthem.
Chin is the general manager of palm oil company PT Kreasi Jaya, which is a subsidiary of Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur Kepong Berhad (KLK). - August 29, 2013.
