Malaysia's petrol and diesel price for motorists is the eighth lowest in the world, thanks to significant government subsidy.
"Out of the 227 countries in the world, Malaysia's petrol and diesel price to its motorists is the eighth lowest," said Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan when winding up the debate on the Supplementary Supply Bill (2012) 2013 today.
Ahmad said the government gives a subsidy of 90.4 sen for each litre of diesel and 90 sen for each litre of RON95 petrol.
He said people have to pay only RM1.80 for one litre of diesel instead of RM2.74 while for the RON95 petrol they have to pay only RM1.80 per litre instead of RM2.80.
Ahmad said cooking gas too enjoyed a substantial subsidy of RM20.80 per cylinder, where the price of a cylinder weighing 14kg was RM26.60 instead of the actual price of RM47.46 per cylinder.
Meanwhile, he did not deny the existence of fuel smuggling to the neighbouring country due to the cheaper price of fuel in Malaysia. – Bernama, July 17, 2013
