Pro Opposition Mufti Datuk Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin has lambasted Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) for accusing controversial preacher Dr Zakir Naik of encouraging terrorism.
He added that he would be the first Muslim to stand up against Dr Zakir if the preacher or other Muslims really promoted terrorist acts.
“I will be the first Muslim against Dr Zakir if there is proof that his statements encourage or invite terrorism.
Even if it’s a Muslim group doing something similar, I will stand up against it.
“They are simply taking his words out of context,” he said.
Hindraf chief P. Waytha Moorthy was reported to have asked the US government to step in and take action against Dr Zakir, whom he accused of promoting terrorism.
Dr Asri said it was not the first time that Hindraf had created racial controversy and warned the public to be more careful of such accusations.
He also said that Dr Zakir was known for playing with words.
If people disagreed with what he was talking about, they should counter him with intellectual and academic arguments, he added.
